Garby Asare Otchere Darko
A leading member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere Darko has been allegedly assaulted by the police.
Mr. Otchere Darko who was part of the protestors demanding a new voters register said he was arrested and beaten with baton and horse whips by the police.
The peaceful demonstration to present a petition to the Electoral Commission turned chaotic after protestors defied the route agreed on with the police.
Pressure group, Let My Vote Count Alliance, Movement for Better Ghana, Alliance for Accountable Governance and some political parties like the Progressive Peoples Party (PPP) and the National Democratic Party (NDP) had served notice to peacefully picket at the EC to present a petition on the need to scrap the existing voters register and compile a new one for 2016 elections.
But the police managed to secure an injunction to prevent them from picketing at the EC. But this was violated leading to the arrest of about 26 protestors.
