The Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye, refused to recognise Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu several times to enable him air the side’s view on the approval of Otiko Afisa Djaba as Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, James Klutse Avedzi, Deputy Minority Leader, has said.
Speaking to Class News on Tuesday evening after parliament approved Ms Djaba, he said: “We in the Minority side of the house believed strongly that issues that were being done on the floor in connection with the approval of the nomination of Otiko Djaba was an illegality and for that matter we needed to express our views but the Speaker will never call even the Minority Leader who stood on his feet for more than 10 minutes. On three consecutive times, the Speaker will never call him to recognise him so that we can air our view and let the Ghanaians know the position that we have taken.”
Ms Djaba was approved by parliament amidst controversy over her failure to do her national service.
Debating Ms Djaba’s approval, Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu said: “She does not have our support and she will not have our support until she behaves in a manner befitting a minister.”
All the Minority legislators on the Appointments Committee voted against her approval citing her inability to undertake her national service as well as her posture during her vetting as reasons.
She, however, was approved with 152 votes on the floor on Tuesday. The Minority boycotted the vote.
