The Rent Bill that will make it illegal for landlords to charge more than a month’s rent from tenants is ready and awaiting approval by cabinet, Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Mr Sampson Ahi, has revealed.
He said: “It [bill] is ready now. We [ministry] have finalised it and we are working to send it to Parliament at this stage so I am hoping that a week or two it will be submitted to Cabinet for consideration then we will bring it to Parliament.”
Mr Ahi explained that by this law, tenants will be expected to deposit a three-month rent in the bank as security after paying for the first month.
He revealed the decision to have a second look at the rent situation in the country was arrived at after an exhaustive consultation with stakeholders.
In the course of the discussion, he said there was the “school of thought that the rent bill should not go beyond six months”, a proposition that was backed with facts and figures making it compelling for the committee to adopt the position.
He explained: “It stands that nobody should pay more than six months.”
“In fact with this we are encouraging one month with three-month security deposit,” he told Joy FM.
