At a time some countries are thinking big by sending their scientists to space in order to serve humanity better through technology, some Ghanaians mainly from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) are doubting pragmatic policies and plans such as the establishment of one dam in every village in the northern part of Ghana as espoused by New Patriotic Party (NPP) flag bearer Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the party’s Director of Communications, Nana Akomea, has said.
Some leading members of the governing NDC have attempted to discredit the proposal of the three-time flag bearer of the NPP by indicating his proposed programme is not feasible or is being undertaken by the government.
An example is the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Alhaji Limuna Muniru, who has said: “He (Nana Akufo-Addo) is now promising but we are doing. You cannot just go and start creating dams. Technical feasibilities are important to find out what is suitable for a particular area. The dams are not the only solution… If you do only dams and there are no equipment for farmers to till the land or no fertilisers, how do you increase yield. Yes, dams are important, but it is not everywhere that dams are also suitable.”
But speaking on Class FM’s Inside Politics hosted by Moro Awudu on Monday August 29, Mr Akomea said: “They (critics of the policy) are talking as if an earthquake is coming. What is wrong with this policy?”
“At a time Americans are going to the moon, Nigeria is having a satellite on Mars, people are [calling for] rains to fall [for their crops to grow]. This is the kind of thinking we have in Ghana.”
According to Nana Akomea, it requires visionary leaders with great ideas to turn the country around, just as has happened in China and also in other developed countries in the lead up to the industrial revolution.
But also speaking on the same programme, a presidential staffer, Kojo Adu-Asare, said the proponents of the programme had not given any strong basis to say the programme can flourish hence the doubts and several questions raised about it.
“It is a nice idea but where it is coming from makes anybody doubt the seriousness of it,” he added.
