Nana Obiri Boahen, Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party is asking for forgiveness for his “indiscretion” in making wild claims about his party, including claims that he has been sidelined from the sharing of political booty since the party returned to power.
In a letter dated March 2, 2018, addressed to President Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former President John Dramani Mahama and members of the National Democratic Congress, as well as the steering committee, executive and members of NPP, Obiri Boahen said he has learnt his lessons and vows never again will he repeat his conduct.
“To err is human, and to forgive is divine” he says, insisting the “unfortunate” incident was “secretly recorded and intentionally mutilated”.
“Respectfully; I am by this letter expressing my profound apology to the President; the Vice President, the Chief of Staff, the Steering Committee, the National Executives, Council of Elders, the National Executive Committee, the National Council of the New Patriotic Party and every member of the New Patriotic Party for my indiscretion.
“I am also; by this letter, rendering an unqualified apology to the former President John Mahama; the National Democratic Congress leadership and every member of the National Democratic Congress of my indiscretion.
“I have learnt much lessons from this unfortunate incident, from this heavily edited, secretly recorded and intentionally mutilated audio recording or cassette; I vow not to find myself under such circumstances again. My loyalty and commitment with/to the New Patriotic Party shall ever continue to be resolute and firm. “To err is human, and to forgive is divine” says the sages.
“I hope this my apology would be accepted by all.
“Counting on your cooperation.”
Obiri Boahen has recanted his own claims, reportedly saying he deliberately lied about the party in order to obtain some information.
He has since been condemned by people both within and outside the NPP. Others, including publisher Kweku Baako, have asked him to resign his post.
