The unidentified person who stole quiz mistress Elsie Effah Kaufmann’s handbag moments after the grand finale of the 2017 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) is a “professional thief”, the victorious contestants from Prempeh College have said.
Mrs Kaufmann lost her bag which contained her ID cards, keys, reading glasses, cash, calculator, and other valuables as she presented the trophy to Prempeh College who beat St. Thomas Aquinas and Adisadel College on Thursday June 29, amidst a stage invasion, at the National Theatre.
The quiz mistress’ missing purse containing her ATM card and ID cards were later dropped at the School of Engineering at the University of Ghana on Saturday July 1, but her bag and other contents can still not be traced.
Speaking on Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM a week after their win – the fourth for the school since the inception of the quiz – Daniel Osei Badu, one of the contestants, said the theft of the biomedical engineer’s treasured handbag was a sad one.
“It’s rather unfortunate that the bag got missing, especially at a time there was so much excitement and an unscrupulous person decided to mar it all,” he told show host Chief Jerry Forson. “We can’t tell who took the bag but we are sure it’s the work of someone who had long planned it. I would term him a professional thief who had planned to hurt the quiz mistress because everything points to the fact that it was premeditated and things went according to plan for him, especially swooping for the bag at a time when all attention was elsewhere.
“So I do not think it’s a student from any of the schools, but a thief who had hatched a plot.”
The Prempeh College student asked the culprit to “return the bag to where he found it”.
Contributing to the discussion, the other half of the triumphant duo, Wonder Sarfo-Ansah, said the contest was “not easy” though he believed confident his school would emerge overall winner, saying they did their “humanly bit” while “prayers helped”.
