Disgruntled residents of Gbulung in the Kumbungu District of the Northern Region took to the streets on Wednesday to protest against the bad roads in the community.
They have threatened to boycott the December polls if the roads are not fixed.
For them, even though the government keeps trumpeting its infrastructural achievements in the country, their town lacks good roads. They have, therefore, given government a one-month ultimatum to fix the roads or see them abstain from voting.
Clad in red armbands and head gear, hundreds of the protesters poured out on to the main roads on Wednesday August 17 carrying placards, some of which read: “JM, it is going against us why?”, “We are tired, no road, no vote”, “John Mahama, remember where you are coming from.”
Spokesperson for the protesters Seidu Safianu told Citi FM: “We the youth of Gbulung and its surrounding communities with the support of our chiefs and elders have resolved to give government a one-month ultimatum which starts from August 17, to act on our request or else we will not vote come December 7. We will not also tolerate any political campaign activities in the area if we don’t see any action on our roads within this period.
“Farmers have to travel to Tamale through Nyankpala for agricultural inputs and sale of their produce but can hardly do so due to the nature of the roads.”
