Several communities in the Sagnarigu district of the Northern Region have been identified as flood prone areas but authorities are finding it difficult to address challenges to avert any disaster as the rainy season sets in.
Class FM’s Mohammed Gadafi, who visited the district on Tuesday, June 20 reported that communities such as Gumani, Nyenshegu, Ward K, Choggu Yapalsi and many others are flood prone areas but residents are adamant to relocate.
Many of the households have encroached on lands built structures indiscriminately with several homes located in waterways.
District Chief Executive, Hajia Mariam Iddrisu who embarked on an assessment tour revealed that the situation demands urgent attentions but was quick to add that the district assembly needs assistance.
She said funds are not readily available therefore their inability to address the challenges.
She bemoaned the wanton sale of lands in these areas wihout recourse to proper guidelines and due diligence from relevant authorities which has resulted in the current challenges.
“Most of them [the problems] will be beyond my limits as a DCE because I am only a district assembly and not municipal executive. If I was a municipal executive I would have find a way to use our urban development fund to solve some of these issues but as a district I am not entitled to the funds so can link up with central government to help deal with the challenged”.
