A future New Patriotic Party (NPP) government under Nana Akufo-Addo will establish a presidential advisory council for science and technology for Ghana’s accelerated growth, a leading member of the party, Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, has disclosed.
According to the former flag bearer aspirant of the NPP, for Ghana to be at the cutting edge of the global economy, it must begin to amplify and integrate the role of science, technology, and innovation in all aspects of national development.
He said the NPP was committed to promoting and leveraging the efforts of the Ghanaian scientific community to help transform the structure of the economy from one that depends on being an exporter of primary produce to an economy that is dependent on export of industrial goods and services.
Professor Boateng made these known at the 2016 manifesto launch of the NPP in Accra on Sunday October 9.
“The years ahead, the NPP government under the leadership of Nana Akufo-Addo will leverage the power of science and technology to provide answers to socio-economic problems. … The characterisation of nations into poor and rich, developed and backward, are based on their level of scientific and technological development,” he stated.
According to the heart surgeon, the presidential advisory council for science and technology “will advise the president on all matters and policies regarding science, technology and innovation. The council will also provide leadership and the propagation of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in our educational system”.
Membership of the council will be drawn from leading scientists and engineers from academic and research institutions, from industry and various fields in the private sector as well as individuals who have excelled in their areas of science, technology and innovation.
