The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has said his party forewarned Ghanaians about Monday’s thuggery that was perpetrated by some members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) following the investiture of President Nana Akufo-Addo.
Some NPP members have been on a frenzy, seizing public toilets, toll booths as well as offices of state institutions such as YEA, NADMO, Passport Office, NHIS, Harbours, among others, in Accra and other parts of the country.
The leadership of the NPP has condemned the seizures and invasion.
Speaking to Chief Jerry Forson on Accra100.5FM’s breakfast show, Ghana Yensom, on Tuesday, 10 January, Mr Asiedu Nketia said the lawless takeovers were predicted by the NDC for which reason the party warned Ghanaians against voting for Mr Akufo-Addo during the electioneering period.
“We warned Ghanaians that Nana Addo, as president, will foment chaos …” Mr Asiedu Nketia said, adding that the violence that accompanied the 2001 and 2009 transitions after the general elections must not be repeated since this time round, there are clear-cut laws spelt out in the Presidential Transitional Act to govern the entire process of handing over power from the previous administration to the new one in all spheres of governance,” Mr Asiedu Nketia said.
“This is the first transition that has a law to guide it, so, if Nana Addo as president cannot control his party people and security, then it says a lot about him. …I believe he is aware of all that is happening.
“Mass dismissals are now impossible during a transition process; you can’t ask people in public office to ‘proceed on leave’ just anyhow without recourse to the transitional law, they should also learn from former presidents Mills and Mahama who demonstrated tolerance towards public officers appointed by the previous government at the time they took office. …They [NPP] should rein their boys in, otherwise Nana Addo will be held responsible for any chaos.”
