Reports that transport fares will go up from Monday February 6, 2017 are false and should be disregarded, the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has said.
A release circulating on social media purportedly from the GRTCC had announced a 15 per cent raise in the cost of transportation effective Monday owing to recent increments in fuel prices.
Denying the reports on Accra News on Sunday February 5, GRTCC Chairman Ben Amoabeng Peprah said his office had made no decision yet to increase fares as GRTCC was still looking at the situation.
“It is not true we are increasing fares tomorrow (Monday). Fuel prices are not the only consideration for fare increments; there are other components we use in the computation,” Mr Peprah told Nana Ansah Sasraku.
According to him, fuel prices account for only “33 per cent” of the total list of items considered in fare reviews, adding that fares are subject to half-yearly reviews, hence prices can go up or down.
Mr Peprah added that the council would, among other things, be meeting Transport Minister Kwaku Ofori-Asiamah before arriving at a decision to increase or reduce fares.
“So, we are still assessing the situation after which we will make our decision public, but definitely not tomorrow,” he concluded.
