Government has not appointed a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the Ghana Oil Company (GOIL), Eugene Arhin, Director of Communications at the presidency, has said, contrary to reports that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had appointed a new leader for the state oil company.
Government’s response is in connection with a press statement issued by Professor William Asumaning, the Board Chairman of GOIL, on Saturday February 25 in relation to a purported appointment of a new CEO of the company by the president.
Professor Assumaning in the statement accused Mr Akufo-Addo of breaching procedures in his appointment of Mr Osei Prempeh as the new CEO of the company.
According to Professor Asumaning, GOIL is a public listed company on the Ghana Stock Exchange with its own regulations which makes it impossible for the president to appoint or dismiss a CEO without observing the necessary procedures.
In his view, therefore, President Akufo-Addo did not follow due procedure in his new appointment of the GOIL CEO.
However a statement from the presidency signed by Mr Arhin expressed disappointment in Professor Asumaning for issuing a statement based on Ghanaweb report headlined: “Nana Addo Picks New Heads for Forestry Commission, Ghana Health Service, and GOIL,” without carrying out checks.
“One would have hoped, in the interest of best practices, that the issuance of such a statement by Prof William Asumaning would have been hinged on concrete evidence, in the form of appointment letters, and not mere speculation and conjecture by an online publication. The statement by the Board Chair was unfortunate and completely needless, to say the least,” the statement from the presidency said.
“For the avoidance of doubt, I wish to state that the president of the republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has not appointed a new CEO of GOIL, and when he decides to do so, it will be done in accordance with laid down procedures.”
