Government has introduced a renewed 8pm to 5:30am curfew at Nkonya and Alavanyo in the Volta Region beginning Sunday, May 21, 2017.
This follows renewed clashes leading to sporadic gunshots in the area on Saturday which resulting in one death.
In response, Interior Minister Ambrose Dery has, in consultation with the Volta Regional Security Council, renewed the curfew in the area. The Minister applauded authorities in the area for their efforts to curb the violence and admonished them “to use the established mechanisms for the resolution of all their conflicts and disputes”.
“Meanwhile, Government will like to reiterate that there is a ban on all persons in the two towns and their environs from carrying arms, ammunitions or any offensive weapon. And any persons found with arms or ammunitions will be arrested and prosecuted,” the statement added.
A 62-year-old woman who was shot dead in the latest incident is reported to have gone out of her home to pick mangoes on Saturday, May 20 when the incident happened.
It would be recalled that Volta Regional Minister Dr Archibald Letsa promised intensified security after the death of a 12-year-old boy on Thursday, May 11.
Prince Kwakutsey, a primary six pupil, was shot by gunmen who broke into his parents’ home shortly after he had returned from school.
There is a long-standing land dispute between the people of Alavanyo and Nkonya that has resulted in many deaths for decades.
