The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has expressed worry about the failure of security agencies to apprehend gunmen who attacked him several days after the incident.
Gunmen attacked Mr Nketia at Suhum, in the Eastern Region on Monday, August 28 when he was returning from a trip to Kumasi.
Narrating the incident to ClassFMonline.com, Mr Nketia said the men, their faces hidden by masks, caused his driver to stop suddenly when they crossed his (Mr Nketia’s) car with a Toyota Tundra vehicle with registration number GT 66612.
The men then got out of their car with AK 47 guns and other weapons and banged their wrists on his car, instructing that he and his driver get down from the car, but upon noticing oncoming vehicles, the thugs quickly got into their car and sped off.
According to him, they followed the gunmen and their vehicles used the same route he used to Accra and passed all the barriers on the highway, but were not arrested as National Security Minister, Kan Dapaah, refused to alert the police even though he had informed the minister shortly after the threat on his life.
Nketia, who spoke in an interview with Accra 100.5 FM on Wednesday, August 30 said he was also shocked that the police at Suhum have not been able to track the owner of the vehicle which was used in the attack since pictures of the vehicle and registration number were given to the Suhum police to assist them with their investigation.
“There were several barriers on the road so if the National Security Minister had informed the Eastern Regional Police to relay the info to all the barriers with the car numbers I provided to arrest them, they would have been arrested. So, there is something fishy about it and I want to pursue the matter,” he said.
“The records of DVLA are computerised and if they have been given the info to retrieve the particulars of the car owner, can’t they do it within three minutes?” he questioned.
Suhum Crimes Officer, ASP Stephen Antwi, has confirmed to Accra FM that the case has been reported and investigations have commenced.
