The Eastern Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission, Kwasi Tsibu-Yirenkyi, has blamed driver fatigue for Sunday’s gory road accident at Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region which claimed 10 lives.
According to him, the accident could have easily been prevented if the driver had rested before embarking on the journey.
The deceased persons, all of whom perished on the spot, were in a Yutong bus which was travelling in the wrong lane from Kumasi to Accra.
Speaking to Class News, Mr Tsibu-Yirenkyi urged unions to ensure drivers use their log books to prevent such accidents.
He said: “This driver didn’t use the right carriage way. He used the left carriage way which is meant for motorist from Kwahu to Kumasi, and when he got to Akwatia, he ran into an articulated truck. He was facing an oncoming vehicle. Clearly, this could have been prevented. There are signs that show that when you coming from Kumasi, when you reach Asona, use the right carriage way, it is clear there so it meant the driver had an issue.
“He was tired because if he is a driver who continuously uses that road, then it’s automatic. He must realise that on reaching Asona, he must use the right lane, so if he didn’t use it, it is not about inexperience; it’s about fatigue. He was tired and therefore could not make the difference. After he crashed, that [is when] he may have realised he was on the wrong carriage way. He was tired.”
