Some female Junior High School (JHS) students of Ahwiam Basic School in the Ningo Prampam District of the Greater Accra region are trading their womanhood for fish due to hunger.
The students, some of whom are expected to sit for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), said they got themselves in the situation because their parents failed to cater for them.
Speaking to Joy News reporter, Kwetey Nartey, a victim who identified herself as Emily, described how she was lured with fish into sleeping with a fisherman.
According to Emily, she gave in to the sexual advances of a fisherman who gave her fish to sell and keep the money.
She said her parents stopped giving her upkeep money and the only person who provided her needs was the fisherman.
Emily said her dream of becoming an Accountant has been shattered even more because the fisherman has refused to accept responsibility for the pregnancy.
The headmaster of Ahwiam Basic School, Solomon Gawunor, said teenage pregnancy among his female students is becoming uncontrollable and it is high time the district authorities do something about the problem.
Gawunor said about ten girls are unable to concentrate on their studies due to their pregnancy and this he said, “is causing the down fall of the community.”
He described as worrying the rate at which few of the female students make it past the basic level and advised the district authority to take some actions.
The Assemblyman of Ahwiam, Francis Dotsu, described the situation as “alarming” which if not resolved will escalate by next year.
Dotsu promised his office will work with the district authorities to address the matter before it gets out of hand.
The Assemblyman sounded a word of caution adding that the Ahwiam District Assembly is considering arresting the boys involved.
