The Ministry for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development has inaugurated a new 10-member National Premix Fuel Committee.
This follows the dissolution of the previous committee due to several controversies that plagued it.
The swearing in of the new members took place at the Fishery Ministry in Accra yesterday [22nd September, 2015].
According the Minister for Fisheries, Sherry Ayittey, “the original idea [of setting up a premix fuel committee] had been diluted to the extent that there was a proliferation of premix fuel sale points owned by individuals rather than fishers, resulting in rampant diversion of the product.”
She further said there were frequent shortages of the premix fuel to the disadvantage of the fishers resulting in dissatisfaction, particularly with the mode of sale of the product.
The national premix fuel committee is expected to oversee the allocation, distribution, and sale of premix fuel.
There is also a national premix fuel secretariat whose mandate is to service the National Premix Fuel Committee.
In an interview with Citi News, Sherry Ayittey disclosed that the new guidelines developed to regulate the activities of the committee will help check corruption and other issues that bedeviled the previous committee.
The committee has representatives from National Fisheries Association of Ghana, Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture development, Association of Oil Marketing Companies, National Inland Canoe Fishermen Council, and some other stakeholders.
The committee will be having their first sitting on the 28th of September.
