Government will today Saturday, 1 October announce the producer price for cocoa beans for the 2016/2017 crop season.
The announcement will coincide with the annual Cocoa Day celebration which takes place at Tepa in the Ashanti Region today.
Cocoa is currently buying at GHS 6,720 per tonne and the Producer Price Review Committee is expected to increase the amount for the new season.
The move will help reduce the incidence of smuggling to neighbouring Ivory Coast – the world’s largest cocoa producer – whichh has increased per kilogram price for farmers by 10 per cent to CFA 1,100.
Public Relations Manager at COCOBOD, Noah Amenyah, speaking to Class Business about the cocoa day celebration, said: “The day will see a lot of farmers coming out. We have a lot of young cocoa farmers in that area who have been inaugurated and they will also be there. Other farmers and stakeholders, input suppliers, will also be around as well as various processing companies. Some will exhibit the items that they deal in, in order to be able to educate the farmers and the people in the area as to what the cocoa industry has to offer…”
