Successive governments in Ghana have been inefficient because Ghanaians have failed to critically and objectively examine manifestos of political parties after they win elections, the flag bearer of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, has said.
The three-time presidential aspirant was of the view that the lack of objective examination and analysis of policy documents have contributed to the lack of real positive impact on the lives of citizens.
“Looking at the manifestos of the various parties that have won elections to be in government, Ghana should not have been where we are today, but what do we see now? Millions are suffering in abject poverty in spite of the numerous juicy promises given,” Dr Nduom, popularly known as ‘Edwumawura’, lamented.
Dr Nduom was speaking at the Spiritan University in the Ashanti Region on Friday September 23 at the Second International Conference on Poverty Management (INCOPOMA) 2016.
The conference was under the theme ‘The Reality and Myth of Poverty Reduction Strategies’.
The entrepreneur argued that even though the nation had lots of wealth and resources, it would have to put them into proper use in order to successfully reduce poverty in the country.
He was of the view that proper structures and systems that will spur growth to liberate Ghanaians from poverty were missing.
One of the fundamental things he feels the country has got wrong is the merging of the Attorney General’s Office with the Ministry of Justice.
For him these two institutions must exist separately to effectively fight corruption, which enriches a few at the expense of the masses.
Dr Nduom added that the lack of proper decentralisation in the country had also resulted in improper local government accountability in the country.
