Yvonne Nduom, wife of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) flag bearer, has described as vile propaganda assertions that her husband’s conglomerate, Groupe Nduom, does not pay its workers well.
There are reports that Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, despite owning many companies across the country and touting himself as ‘Edwumawura’ (Employer), pays his workers meagre salaries.
Setting the record straight on Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM on Wednesday November 9, Mrs Nduom said such reports were untrue.
“It is propaganda. Because he (Dr Nduom) says, ‘I have created jobs’, people will then have to counter and that is the only way they can do it,” she told show host Chief Jerry Forson.
“…Government says it has created 600 jobs. The minimum wage in Ghana is GHS170 but for Groupe Nduom, the least a worker – let’s say an uneducated person who sweeps – takes home is GHS250,” she said, adding: “We pay social security for everybody, we don’t have casual workers, we pay pension. Apart from paying social security and all the tiers, we provide free medical insurance apart from the National Health Insurance Scheme for you, your wife, and three children. We provide life insurance; we give them meals each day, which amounts to GHS3 per person a day.”
According to Mrs Nduom, “If we were to put all of these together, each person actually enjoys over GHS600 a month, and this is the lowest [for an] employee, and so people should also ask how come Groupe Nduom has workers who have been there for 20, 19, 15 years?… It’s not compulsory; if you feel you are not paid well, what do you do? You leave. When you take a look at all the constructions going on, even in Elmina, labourers earn GHS25 a day, the artisans earn GHS35 a day, so this is vile propaganda, and it’s never true.”
