Allegations by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that President John Mahama and his brother tried to bribe its Northern regional chairman is the latest plot in the party’s campaign of “lies”, which the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) will not dwell on, Theophilus Tetteh Chaie, Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central, has said.
The NPP, at a press conference addressed by Mustapha Hamid, spokesperson for flag bearer Nana Akufo-Addo, alleged that the NDC, led by John Mahama and his brother, Ibrahim, had offered a bribe of GHS3.3million, two SUVs, and GHS 500,000 to Mr Bugri Naabu to defect to its camp and accuse Mr Akufo-Addo as being a hater of northerners.
But according to the lawmaker, the NPP, sensing defeat in the upcoming presidential and parliamentary polls, had adopted a strategy of false allegations and continued attacks on the Electoral Commission and Mr Mahama to distract the electorate, one of which was Tuesday’s press conference.
Speaking on Accra News, Mr Chaie said: “When defeat looms, such things often happen. If you look at how the NPP has become so intolerant, has become so impatient, it means they are fully aware that come December 7, His Excellency John Mahama will hand them a ‘one touch’ [defeat].”
He said President Mahama’s numerous infrastructural projects across the country had more than made the case for a second term in office, a reality the NPP does not want to come to terms with.
“We should not waste our time on such issues. The time is up. They have all realised that the good works of John Mahama, which is ensuring development in all parts of Ghana, is a great and cherished feat everyone is praising. So they realise that come December 7, whatever they do, Ghanaians will vote for His Excellency John Dramani Mahama. NDC as a political party needs not bribe anybody in order to win this year’s election,” the legislator added.
