The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Keta, Richard Quashigah, has vowed to resist attempts by the party’s leadership to force a Minority Leader on them.
According to him, the party has not settled on anyone yet to become the minority leader.
He, however, expressed confidence in the ability of the Chairman of the Finance Committee of Parliament, James Klutse Avedzi, to become the Minority Leader of the Seventh Parliament of the Fourth Republic to be constituted on January 7, 2017.
Mr Quashigah, in an interview with Class News’ Ekow Annan, said Mr Avedzi’s leadership and political experience makes him better placed than others to become Minority Leader.
“Nobody has chosen anybody at this time to be Minority Leader, and so if any group of people is peddling that in the media, it is false. And if, indeed, some people in leadership of the party have settled on one individual, that would be imposition and that will not help the NDC’s cause at all,” he stated.
“Nobody should impose anybody on the elected Members of Parliament. We should be allowed to have a say in this matter… We belong to a political party and so the major stakeholders of that political party will also need to have a say. We need to get to a point of convergence which will be acceptable to all because this is a democracy; it’s not a dictatorial era or regime, and that’s why we’re saying that as for imposition it is unacceptable.”
Mr Quashigah noted that the Volta regional caucus of the NDC in parliament had agreed to nominate Mr Avedzi as Minority Leader.
“We in the Volta Region have made our proposal and our proposal is James Klutse Avedzi. We are very confident with his pedigree, especially being the chairman of the Finance Committee, he will do a good job as Minority Leader. James Avedzi is a very meticulous, sharp individual who pays attention to detail. He is one who is able to spend a lot of time on matters and issues. He has that drive and he is also somebody who has the temerity of bringing the people together, he is a unifier to a large extent.”
