Serial callers belonging to the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti Region have condemned all the regional chairman of the party for endorsing President Mahama ahead of the party’s primaries to elect a new flagbearer for the 2020 elections.
In a jointly signed statement, the chairmen urged the former President to pay heed to calls by the party’s foot soldiers since he is better-placed to win power from the governing NPP come 2020.
But growing criticism continues to greet that statement by some party supporters and leaders who believe the move is in bad taste.
A statement issued by the serial callers and signed by their chair, Julius Agahowa, said: “We the members of the above mentioned group wish to condemn the actions the ten (10) regional Chairmen of our beloved party the National Democratic Congress (NDC). We see their conduct as unfortunate and it has the tendency of creating disunity in our great party.
“The ten regional chairpersons do not have any guarantee that they themselves will be given another chance to lead the party in their respective regions in the upcoming internal elections. So the issue about endorsing a particular candidate to lead the party come 2020 is unacceptable. We see the call and the decision of our regional chairmen as a hasty one and one that lacks merit.
“Again, we believed that giving equal opportunity to all potential candidates will be best in the interest of the party.
“Moreover, we also believe that His Excellency John Dramani Mahama does not need this divisive declaration to lead the party come 2020, because he has already marketed himself within the party. We therefore call on the National Executive Committee (NEC.) to sanction the regional chairmen and all those who intend to create confusion in the great NDC party.”
