The main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has abandoned the family of the late Dr Asemfofro, one of the party’s serial callers, after his demise, Kweku Baako, an NDC serial caller in the Ashanti Region, has said.
Dr Asemfoforo, known privately as Osei Yaw Nketia, died from an undisclosed illness at the 37 Military Hospital on Sunday April 16.
The notable serial caller was famous for openly criticising former President John Kufuor during his government’s People’s Assembly and on political shows on radio. He was 51.
But since his demise, no official of the NDC has paid a visit to his family to commiserate with them over the demise of their loved one who worked tirelessly for the party, Baako said while speaking on Accra News on Monday April 24.
According to him, this treatment sends wrong signals to other persons at the grassroots of the NDC who have sacrificed themselves for the party over the years.
“In 2008 when the NDC was in opposition, Asemfoforo was the only person in the NDC who looked straight into the eyes of former President Kufuor to challenge him on most issues as a way of campaigning for the NDC,” he recollected.
“When you go to the Obra Spot area, everybody knows him as one who worked hard for the NDC, and so it beats our imagination why days after his demise, no official of the party has visited the family to commiserate with them.
“This is not the case with the NPP. When some of their members died, I remember the then National Chairman of the NPP, Jake Obestebi Lamptey, and Sir John visited their families and consoled them and even helped in organising the funeral. Look at how the NPP supported the family of the press aide of Dr Bawumia who lost his life. That is encouraging, but not what is happening in the NDC.”
