President John Mahama has resorted to sharing of goodies because he has failed to fix Ghana’s economy which would have provided meaningful jobs and income for Ghanaians, flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, has stated.
“In the run-up to this year’s elections, the president and his wife are distributing items to Ghanaians. If things were alright and there was money in our pockets, would we need to be given handouts of pans, outboard motors, and other items from him? If he has done very well in office, would he be distributing things to court our support?” he asked.
It would be recalled that the Danquah-Busia-Dombo party has constantly accused the president of abusing incumbency by trying to buy votes throughout his regional tours. The latest is the distribution of outboard motors to some fisherfolk in Western Region.
His wife, Lordina Mahama, has not been spared as the acting General Secretary of the NPP, John Boadu, questioned the source of funds of her NGO, the Lordina Mahama Foundation, which has embarked on numerous charity projects and distribution of items.
The NPP felt part of her support comes from government coffers and challenged her to state where she gets her funds.
Nana Addo, who was speaking at the Avenue Chemist grounds in the Okaikoi North constituency of the Greater Accra Region, believed the action of Mr Mahama indicated that he had failed in office and Ghanaians must vote him out during the December polls for a more competent leadership.
“You remember he said previously that Ghanaians are forgetful people? Let’s show him with our thumbs this year that we have not forgotten the hardship his government has put us through. With your help, we will change him,” Mr Akufo-Addo added.
The Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) recently published a report indicating that 51 per cent of Ghanaians believed that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) was engaged in vote buying while 32 per cent felt that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) used various ways to coerce people to vote for them.
