Deputy Sports Minister Pius Enam Hadzide has clarified that the ministry has not issued any winning bonus to the Black Starlets team for reaching the finals of the Africa U17 Championship.
Some news outlets reported that the players received $1,000 each as bonus from Mr Hadzide for reaching the grand finale, but the Deputy Sports Minister explains that was not the case.
“Yes, I was at the stadium and later joined the players in the dressing room to motivate them at my own cost to forge ahead. The 1000 [dollars] I gave was for a small refreshment for the entire contingent for the great work done,” he pointed out in a post on his Facebook wall on Thursday, May 25.
“I did not pay winning bonuses to the players of the national Under 17 team for qualifying for the finals,” he maintained.
