Highlife musician Kofi B, born Kofi Boakye Yiadom, has disclosed that most executives of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) have no understanding of music given their failure to speak out when undeserving artistes win awards at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs)
“If the president [of MUSIGA] understands music, why does he not say anything when awards are given to the wrong people? He doesn’t even know what music is. Only few of the executives understand music but are not given the opportunity to voice their opinions,” he told DJ Premier on Entertainment Capital on Accra100.5FM on Saturday November 12.
To him, past and present presidents of MUSIGA have been concerned with pursuing benefit, instead of being minded to address the situation with the awards.
Asked if the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) pays him royalties, he responded: “What I am being paid is OK. It’s because Kojo Antwi is also a musician and always ensures it’s done well. He’s also a musician and understands how music is done.”
He added: “Those who do not understand and know how music is done are the ones who always get elected [as MUSIGA president] and spend the [union’s] funds anyhow.”
The highlife musician, who has been in the industry for more than 20 years now, has lots of popular songs including Twa Me Keke, Mmobrowa, Aserewa, Koforidua Flowers, Bantama Kwasi Boakye, Yaw Dompreh, and Akua Ataa.
