The Ministry of Health (MoH) has directed the principal accountant at the Kumasi Nursing and Midwifery Training College, Bismark Duadua Mahama, to step aside for investigations to commence into allegations he paid less than the required amount to students of the institution as allowances.
Government a few months ago announced the restoration of allowances for nurse trainees of public institutions, with the monies released to the colleges last week. Each student was expected to receive GHS450 – being three months’ cumulative allowance of GHS150 per month per nurse trainee.
However, according to Mr Tony Goodman, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) at the MoH, Mr Mahama initially paid an amount of GHS360 to each student, for which reason the Ministry, receiving a complaint about the accountant’s action, has asked him to step aside for an inquest to be carried out.
Confirming the decision of the ministry to Accra News on Friday, Mr Goodman said: “We have given a directive to them to pay the amount (GHS450) to the [student] nurses, but many schools are paying less than what they should be paying. They have given their reasons, but if we give a directive, we expect everyone to comply. So we have asked him to step aside so we carry out investigations as to what happened.”
