The Institute for Liberty and Policy Innovation (ILAPI-Ghana) has condemned what it describes as “bribery and corruption” associated with election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executive (MMDCE) nominees.
The Executive Director of ILAPI-Ghana, Peter Bismark Kwofie, said in a statement on Tuesday, May 16: “Assembly members and other legible ‘endorsers’ are demanding amounts between GHS100 and GHS2000 before voting.”
The statement pointed out that “in the case where the municipalities or districts are not in the strongholds of the ruling party, the amount may shoot up to GHS4000 and would still not be endorsed to assume the decentralised throne for development”.
According to the group, the practice is “undemocratic and immoral as these executives would need to find means to profit from the taxes and contracts for development at the decentralised level with little or no monitoring from the central government”.
