The Minority in parliament has, through outrage, forced the government to withdraw an amount €1.7 million (GHS7, 513,154.34), put aside for the construction of a bungalow for the Vice Chancellor of the yet-to-be built University of Environment and Sustainable Development.
The amount for the project has now been revised downwards to €540,000 (GHS2,386, 531.38), a difference of GHS5,126,622.96.
The Minority fought the amount following the approval of a €38 million (Ȼ168,047,360) loan deal between Ghana and the Deutsche Bank for the development of the university. It was later withdrawn and the house rather approved €45 million (Ȼ197,051,395) for the construction of the university.
The school is to be situated in Somanya, Eastern Region.
Minority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu said on the floor of the house that: “The Vice Chancellor’s bungalow alone is going to cost us as a nation €1.7 million, where are we headed as a nation? This is so dangerous for the economic health of this country. Why are we being too profligate?”
