The dismissal of 206 police recruits who were undergoing training at the Pwalugu Police Training School in the Upper East Region ignites the debate on the recruitment procedure of the Ghana Police Service, Nana Owusu Sekyere, a security analyst, has said.
His comment follows the decision by the police administration to sack the recruits who did not meet required academic qualifications.
A letter to that effect, signed by Mrs Beatrice Vib-Sanziri, Commissioner of Police, Director-General/ Human Resource Department, to the Officer Commanding PPSTS, Pwalugu, said: “I am directed by the Inspector General of Police to inform you to withdraw from training all recruits who do not meet the required academic qualification as follows: Only BECE Certificates (44), BECE and NVTI (22),NVTI 22, BECE and NABPTEX (7), NABPTEX 2, WASSCE 15, City and Guilds 1 and No Certificate 1.”
Speaking in relation to this matter in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson, host of Ghana Yensom, on Accra100.5FM on Monday February 6, Mr Sekyere said: “This is a national recruitment exercise and affects every person. Whether good or bad, they (recruits) will definitely affect us and so this matter is of national interest.”
“The consequences of recruiting unqualified persons in the security service of this country and any other country could be very disastrous and, so, we should be very interested in the issues surrounding the recruitment of security personnel. We should ensure transparency in the recruitment exercise; that is very key.
“This matter raises a lot of issues about the recruitment exercise regarding the Ghana Police Service. They cite academic requirements as being the reason for the dismissal. If that is the case, then the procedure must be clearly spelt out for the whole public to know. We should ensure transparency in the system.”
