President John Dramani Mahama has promised to build five more stadia in five regions across the country should he be retained in office in the December 7 polls.
The beneficiary regions will be Upper West, Upper East, Volta, Eastern and Brong Ahafo. This was contained in the 2016 Manifesto highlights of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) which were presented by the president in Accra on Tuesday September 13.
Ghana can currently boast of stadia in Sekondi Takoradi, Kumasi, Accra and Cape Coast. However, concerns have been raised about the maintenance of these state properties as the Sekondi, Kumasi and Accra stadia have been left in a bad shape over the years.
Outlining his plans for sports in the manifesto highlights, Mr Mahama disclosed that plans are afoot to recruit athletes from the senior high schools to feed the national teams. “In every region, one of the Community Day Senior High Schools will be selected and will be fitted and developed into a centre of excellence in sports. All the young people who excel in sports will be brought to that secondary school. …They will compete in athletics and all the sports against each other and we will draw the young talents from there to feed the national teams”.
