Bernard Asamoah aka Daddy, a 17-year-old suspect in the murder of Major Maxwell Mahama, is on remand at a borstal facility, the Ghana Police Service has revealed.
Police prosecutors told an Accra District Court on Wednesday June 21 that they believed he was 17 years old hence the reason for which the court remanded him to the facility.
Meanwhile, at the court on Wednesday, a total of 49 suspects who were previously remanded into police custody to reappear were discharged upon application by police prosecutors.
Immediately thereafter, police re-arrested the discharged suspects, bringing the total of suspects in custody to 56, out of which 32 were put before the same court for their remand on charges of murder and conspiracy to commit crime, to wit murder.
The 32 are William Baah aka Misky, Yaw Annor aka Agahowa, Akwasi Baah aka Baya, Kwame Tuffour aka Asowonan, Kwasi Asante, Joseph Appiah Kubi aka Kum Dede, Kojo Animah, Philip Badu, Kofi Nyame aka Abortion, Michael Anim aka Nana Anim, Bernard Asamoah aka Daddy, Ebenezer Appiah aka Kwasi Agyei, Charles Quainin aka Kwasi Boah, Anthony Amoah, Bismark Donkor aka Dada, Kwame Agyei, Bismark Asamoah, Solomon Sackey, Kwadwo Abebrese, Evans Asare aka Body, Richmond Bio aka Burkina, Perpetual Owusu, Kofi Appiah, Prince Amponsah, Isaiah Manu, Prince Fosu, Emmanuel Gyamfi, Evans Fosu aka Ampofo, Anna Gyima aka Akua Asantewaa, John Nyarko, Ato Kwame, and Vivian Asahene aka Mafia.
They are to reappear in court on 6th July, 2017.
Police is also looking for some eight (8) persons believed to be connected to the murder of the deceased.
They are: Yaw Amankwaah, Kwadwo Fordjour, Kwabena Kenkeba, Tikwa, Yaw Boadu, Madam Deedikor, Eric Asante aka Yaw Agade, and Kofi Ahenkora. Therefore, the public is entreated to provide relevant information for their arrest.
Anyone with information on their whereabouts have been requested to report to CID/Headquarters or the nearest police station, police social media platforms, or call 191 all networks, MTN and Vodafone short code 18555.
Major Mahama was lynched by irate youth of Denkyira Obuasi on suspicion that he was an armed robber, after a snail seller informed the assemblyman of the area that the soldier was an armed robber, having seen the sidearm of the now deceased officer as he took money from his pocket to pay for snails he had bought from her.
He was buried on Friday June 9.
