Ex-president John Dramani Mahama has touched down in Banjul, Gambia, to resume mediation talks to convince President Yahya Jammeh to step down.
Together with Nigeria’s Muhammadu Buhari as ECOWAS mediators, Mr Mahama is expected to convince Mr Jammeh, who is contesting the results of that country’s election, to leave office.
The pair is expected to be joined by Liberia’s Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and officials of the UN, AU, and ECOWAS to convince Mr Jammeh to step down, paving the way for the investiture of the winner of December’s presidential election in The Gambia.
Mr Jammeh’s term officially ends next Wednesday, but Mr Jammeh wants the results annulled and fresh elections conducted as it emerged that the Electoral Commission (EC) changed some results of the election, a claim the EC said did not affect the final results of the elections.
The Supreme Court in Gambia is yet to deliver a verdict on the case but Mr Barrow has told the BBC he was confident he would be sworn in next week despite his rival’s refusal to give up power.
Mr Barrow won 43.3 per cent of the vote compared with Mr Jammeh’s 39.6 per cent. A third candidate, Mama Kandeh, got 17.1 per cent.
