The Ga-Dangme Concerned Group has pleaded with the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to ensure that ex-president John Mahama’s ex-gratia is settled honourably.
A statement signed by the president of the group, Nii Ayaafio Tetteh I, stated in a press release on Monday January 9 that even though the National Democratic Congress (NDC) failed to grant the wishes of ex-president John Agyekum Kufuor for an office, the current government should not pay evil with evil.
“We are also saying that even though pronouncements by persons such as Prince Derick Adjei (former spokesperson for the Ga-Dangme Council) and others for the ejection of ex-president Kufour from his Ridge office was not right, we are urging the NPP government to be circumspect in dealing with the Mahama residence issue. Prince Derick Adjei and his cohorts must bow their heads in shame by their actions because what goes around comes around as the saying goes,” the statement said.
The release further indicated: “As a group we are not saying Nana Addo’s government should measure the NDC with the same yardstick they used on them, rather a great lesson must be learnt from this phenomenon because absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
The group was emphatic of their political neutrality but indicated that the NDC failed to address issues affecting Ga-Dangmes hence their decision to support a government ready to solve the numerous issues of the Ga-Dangme people.
“A typical example is their failure to see to it that the registrar of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, Henry Attipoe, who is not an indigene, is transferred to the Volta Region as directed by the then president, but as we speak now, Mr Attipoe is still at the Dodowa office [of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs]. What is he doing there?” they questioned.
The group also refuted allegation by analysts that they were supporting one Ofei Darko to be the Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Area (AMA).
“Lastly, we are debunking rumours rife in town that the group is supporting Hon Ofei Darko to be the next mayor. Rather, we are solidly behind Hon Ishmael Ashitey to be nominated as the mayor of Accra. He has identified himself with the Ga-Dangme people all these years. We also believe in him to deliver on his promises. However, if he becomes arrogant and rude like some Ga-Dangmes in the NDC, we shall stand up against him with press conferences and demonstrations and subsequently get him out like we did to Afotey Agbo by getting him transferred to the Volta Region,” the statement added.
