Workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have called for the inclusion of the company in government’s plan to list some state organisations on the Ghana Stock Exchange.
The call comes after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo revealed in his maiden State of the Nation address that the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO) would be listed on the stock market as part of plans to reduce the cost of power projects and ensure value for money.
Speaking to Class News, Patrick Tetteh Benyemi, National Divisional Secretary of Staff of ECG, said the company must be included in that plan.
“Surprisingly he (Mr Akufo-Addo) said the VRA, GRIDCO would be listed on the stock exchange and this is what we as a union have been talking about that ‘why don’t you list ECG on the stock exchange?’ After all, we have capable and able Ghanaians who can run ECG to make it a more profitable institution and this is what we have been talking about. So if the government is saying VRA and GRIDCO would be listed on the stock exchange, we the workers of ECG are crying for that, that we should be listed on the stock exchange,” he stated.
