New Orleans’ rap great Lil Wayne sat down with Elliott Wilson on Wednesday (October 3) to talk all things Tha Carter V in front of the CRWN interview series’ live audience.
As they did for the release of Weezy’s dangerously anticipated 12th studio album, fans have been practically drooling over the juicy details of the years-long creation behind the 23-track album.
Music, and, more narrowly, hip-hop, critics everywhere bowed to Tha Carter V as Wayne’s most personal and masterful album to date. However, they couldn’t help but notice that even among C5’s G.O.A.T.-driven lyricism and multifaceted hip-hop quality, there was still one thing missing: a feature from one-third of the Young Money all-star team, Drake.
WILSON STARTED OFF BY EXPLAINING THAT SOME FOLKS WERE BOTHERED THAT DRAKE WASN’T ON THE ALBUM
“He has a song, it didn’t get cleared, man,” Weezy responded. “People be trippin’ when they find out who it is or when they find out what the song’s subject is about.” He explained that these unnamed individuals apparently didn’t want the mystery Tunechi and Drizzy song to “represent their names like that, or something like that.” When Wilson asked if it had to do with the song’s raunchy content, Weezy himself couldn’t exactly pinpoint whether or not that was the cause.
Wilson’s comment was Weezy’s best guess on why they rejected the clearance for the song, though. Otherwise, he’d just assume they wouldn’t clear it simply because of a personal thing, perhaps. “I think it’s because it’s me,” he said. “That’s how I’m gonna always think; ‘Oh, you just don’t want to do it because it’s me.’”
All good, Tunechi. One clearance don’t stop no show!
‘YOU REALLY DON’T KNOW WHY THEY SAY NO,’ HE CONTINUED
