Deputy Chief of Staff Kenneth Wujangi has urged northerners to vote for President John Mahama, who is their kith and kin, in the December presidential election rather than bringing in another party which does not care about northerners.
Speaking at the launch of the governing National Democratic Congress’ campaign in Bimbilla in the Northern Region, Mr Wujangi said: “The President has started several projects like the Eastern Corridor road, the schools that are at various stages of completion, the hospitals, roads that are not completed and many more other projects. If there is a change in government, we run the risk of having them not completed altogether.”
He said: “As northerners, we need a government that is noted for completing projects and not political parties that are specialised in abandoning projects. We need continuity and not any government that does not care about northerners.
“We called Volta Region our World Bank because of JJ Rawlings; look at Kufour’s time, he won massively in Ashanti Region during his first and second terms in office. But if we neglect our own son, or own brother, husband, and so on, then what are telling the world? That we don’t care about ourselves. If we northerners make a mistake and change the government, it is our own mistake.
“The Tamale International Airport was started by Kwame Nkrumah and it was abandoned for so many years until recently that His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, during his first tenure in office, at least, we can witness an international flight from Tamale to Saudi Arabia, and that is a record for us.”
Just over the weekend, Mr Wujangi’s boss, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, told people of the northern parts of the country that it would be unfair for them to deny President Mahama, who is also a northerner, a second term in office.
At the launch of Majority Leader Alban Bagbin’s campaign in Nadowli in the Upper West Region on Saturday, 24 September, Mr Debrah appealed to northerners not to disappoint their own brother in the December 7 polls.
“Now it’s the turn of President John Dramani Mahama, who is from the north, and we are being told that we should let him stay only four years so that we can bring somebody. I don’t think this is fair,” Mr Debrah told the crowd of supporters, adding: “And, so, I’m using this occasion to urge you all to vote massively for your own brother.
“The last time we had a president from the northern part of this country is 35 years ago, and, so, if we are not lucky and this opportunity slips by, who knows, are we going to wait for another 35 years?”
Mr Mahama is seeking re-election for a second four-year term in office while Mr Bagbin is seeking his seventh four-year term in parliament.
