Otiko Afisa Djaba, Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister, has described the death of a Level 400 student of the University of Ghana, Jennifer Nyarko, as sad and unfortunate.
Jennifer, according to reports, jumped to her death from the balcony of the Akuafo Hall after having been in seclusion for days and avoiding lectures.
The Wednesday incident sent the whole campus into shock.
It is not clear why the deceased jumped to her death but some students are speculating that she may have been suffering from high fever.
Ms Nyarko was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Legon Hospital.
Her suicide comes almost two weeks after an 18-year-old petrochemical student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Adwoa Anyimadu-Antwi, who was the daughter of Asante Akim Central MP Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, also killed herself.
Speaking to Class 91.3FM on Wednesday Ms Afisa Djaba said: “That is very unfortunate on this very special day of women. The loss of her life is very painful especially to her parent, friends, and family. So I will like to use this opportunity to sympathise with them and offer my personal condolence and that of the ministry. These are very sensitive areas and we must be careful how we talk about them in the media.
“The pain of a parent of a lost child is unimaginable, it is very difficult and so I would want us to handle this issue with sensitivity and not to come out and sensationalise them.”
