The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said “President Akufo-Addo is turning out to be like Kweku Ananse” – the fabled character that typifies deception in Ghanaian folklore.
The National Chairman of the party, Kofi Portuphy, who addressed a press conference in Accra on Thursday, 20 July, explained that in Ghanaian folklore, Kweku Ananse always feigns intelligence and shrewdness but ends up scampering to hide his embarrassment when he is exposed.
“The embarrassment engulfing the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government is becoming too much,” he said.
He argued that the NPP came to power with false allegations of corruption against the Mahama administration but currently turning out to be worse in terms of graft.
However, “as it stands now, the NPP government is sinking in a quicksand of corruption and the president is looking on with gaping helplessness”.
Mr Portuphy also said the president must stay home and work to better the lot of Ghanaians instead of “junketing” abroad all the time to the extent that he is now a “legal alien” in his own country.
