Former Black Stars coach James Kwesi Appiah has been granted permission to accept the role of coach of the Sudan national team after negotiating with the life patron of the club His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The veteran coach was believed to have already accepted to return to Sudan this time as the national team coach having initially coached Al Khartoum.
However, his role with Asante Kotoko as the technical director meant he had to wait to finalise negotiations with the hierarchy of the club before moving on.
On Wednesday, September 27, an official statement released by Asante Kotoko stated that, the former Ghana captain had been cleared to join Sudan while simultaneously leading the technical department of the Porcupine Warriors following a meeting with the king in London.
“The life patron of Asante Kotoko, His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has blessed our technical director, Kwasi Appiah, to accept the role as Head Coach of Sudan national team, the club wrote.
The decision by former Ghana national team coach, Kwesi Appiah, to take up the coaching role at Sudan has further raised questions about his ambition to run for the upcoming Ghana Football Association (GFA) elections. However, it has been clarified that Appiah will continue to pursue his intention to contest in the elections while also keeping an eye on his coaching responsibilities with the SectretaryBirds.
“Mr Appiah will, however, maintain his role as Technical Director of Kotoko.
“He will contest in the Ghana Football Association’s Executive Council elections next month in this capacity.
“The experienced technical brain, who has managed the Black Stars twice in the period, 2013 to 2014 and 2017 to 2019, is expected to lead the technical direction of Kotoko as we work on restructuring the team.”
During his tenure with Al Khartoum, he led the team to a fourth-place finish in the league and qualification to the Confederation Cup.
