Cloth sellers at the Kumasi Central Market in the Ashanti Region on Monday, July 24, 2017 wore red bands to protest against over taxation by the Ghana Revenue Authority.
The angry traders closed stalls while threatening to beat any worker from the GRA if they dare step foot in the market with the intention of collecting tax or closing down stalls as punishment for nonpayment.
Those who were previously paying GHS500 now have been taxed GHS1,300, a situation they described as unfortunate.
They told Accra100.5FM’s Elisha Adarkwah that some of them had their stalls locked up on Wednesday July 19, 2017 for nonpayment of tax.
This, according to the Queen mother of the cloth sellers, Mrs Mary Nkrumah, was unlawful.
She recalled that President Nana Akufo-Addo, during the 2016 election campaign, promised to make trading in the country comfortable and also reduce taxes.
She, on behalf of the traders, therefore, appealed to government to intervene on the current over-taxation or face their wrath in the 2020 elections.
