Police in the Ashanti Region have arrested a KIA truck driver whose actions triggered a fire outbreak at the Kumasi Central Market.
According to the police, 49-year-old Awudu Karim was turned in by officials at the Ashfoam Company Limited in Kumasi hours after he absconded when the fire started.
The driver was said to have ignored an initial warning from police officers who were directing traffic in the area.
The raging fire, which took frantic efforts by fire officers to douse, swept through at least 10 shops including a branch of the Asante Akyem Rural Bank.
The fire wreaked havoc by burning properties running into millions of Ghana cedis.
The suspect is currently in custody at the Manhyia Divisional Police Command.
Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, ASP Nketiah Yeboah, who confirmed the arrest said police had begun investigations into the incident.
