Incumbent Member of Parliament for Bantama, Henry Kwabena Kokofu has confessed to filing to run as an independent parliamentary nominee in the December polls but says he has given strict orders to his assigns to withdraw his nomination from the Electoral Commission.
“I’ve indeed filed to run as an independent candidate. I filed last Friday but I have given orders for the filing to be withdrawn,” Mr Kokofu told Peace FM’s Kwami Sefa Kayi on Monday, 3 October.
“I profusely, unreservedly and unconditionally apologise to the flag bearer of the NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo; the whole party, especially former President John Kufuor as well as the constituents and party executives in Bantama for my action,” Mr Kokofu said.
He, however, denied allegations that he has resigned from the party. “I haven’t resigned from the NPP and will never resign from the party. Claims to the contrary are false.”
A statement from the NPP MP over the weekend said: “I wish to formally communicate to all stakeholders of the NPP that I resign as a member from the party with effect from today (1st October, 2016). I wish to thank all who supported me during my time as a candidate and also a member of parliament for the Bantama constituency. I have to embark on a personal project and I think it will be a rightful decision to resign and concentrate fully on this mission. I feel many people now question my loyalty to the NPP upon my decision to run as an independent parliamentary candidate. I equally doubt that I can remain loyal to the party and it is prudent I resign and then focus on my personal mission. Though I hope to win, I would rejoin the party in the event that I lose the upcoming election.”
