An aggrieved Assembly member has blamed the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly Boss, Kojo Bonsu for the protracted stalemate blocking the progress of the Assembly’s Presiding Member elections.
The election of the presiding member of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) on Tuesday hit a snag as the Assembly failed to get a PM for the fifth time in a row.
The controversial elections was rather rocked with confusion with Assembly members abandoning the voting process, after a free-for-all fight broke in the middle of the polls.
Both candidates, Nana Kofi Senya and Nana Adumhene failed their bid in yet another encounter, as the two were unable to reach two-thirds majority required by law.
But the assembly member for Old Suame, Emmanuel Okyere in an interaction with Fiifi Banson on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 FM insists the problems festering within the assembly should be laid at the doorsteps of the KMA Boss.
He said the situation has morphed into a ‘thug’ between the ruling NDC and largest opposition NPP.
According to him, the Chief Executive is working behind the scenes to impose Nana Adumhene, the supposed NDC favorite on the assembly, when the former has lost popularity on the grounds.
“He was always on a World tour abandoning the work of the Assembly, when we voted for him sometime back. Even as I’m speaking to you now he’s booked his trip to the US this week and might return back in five months time-this has always been the practice. How can we trust such a person and give him the PM job?
“We moved the motion for the Assembly to return next week Tuesday on the elections – We’ll monitor and see whether we will be called back, if they don’t we’ll mobilize ourselves and embark on another demonstration.”
On the other hand, the Assembly member for Boadi Emina Appiadu Electoral Area, Benjamin Afranie claimed the murky situation is as a result of the partisanship creeping into the elections.
According to him, some members who have evil intent will want to capitalize on the political season to turn the KMA issues into partisan politics.
For him, Nana Kofi Senya cannot even secure the two thirds majority, should Nana Adumhene leave the contest for him (Senya) to go unopposed.
