Five persons who played various roles in robbing an attendant of the Koala Shopping Mall in January 2016 have been sentenced to between 20 and 39 years in prison with hard labour by an Accra Circuit Court presided over by Justice Aboagye Tandoh.
The accused persons: Michael Edor Ahiateku aka Old Soldier, a private security man, and Frederick Sedzro Kwame were charged with conspiracy to rob while Gilbert Osabutey, Stanley Obaliko, and Okoe Quarcoe, three other accomplices, were also charged with robbery.
The court on Monday August 8 found all of them guilty and handed down the jail term to the accused.
Class FM’s court reporter Nabil Ahmed Rufai reported that the trial judge indicated that the five were convicted based on the role each played in the robbery.
It is recalled that a taxi cab driver knocked down two robbers and thwarted their broad daylight heist on Saturday January 9, 2016. He was promised a new car by the management of Koala supermarket.
His heroic deed attracted applause from Ghanaians on social media. Even former President Jerry Rawlings issued a statement saying the cab driver deserved national laurels for his courage and selflessness.
Mr Rawlings commended the driver for knocking down the gun-wielding robbers, who had attacked and robbed a lady.
The two shot and wounded the Koala supermarket salesgirl, who was on her way to deposit a huge sum of money belonging to Koala in the bank. Upon seeing the two robbers fleeing, the cab driver gave them hot chase and knocked them down, as they made their getaway on a motorbike.
Despite their predicament, the two kept shooting until an officer, who chanced upon the incident, intervened and made sure the two were arrested.
The robbery victim, who sustained gunshot wounds on her leg, was treated at the 37 Military Hospital.
