The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) will today, Thursday, 13 October, attempt to elect a Presiding Member on the seventh try after six failed attempts that were fraught with free-for-all fisticuffs.
The Assembly has been split as supporters of the candidates for the position took entrenched positions to ensure their preferred candidate got elected.
In the six elections conducted so far, none of the candidates could garner the constitutionally mandated two-thirds majority of votes cast.
As a result, Amakomhene Nana Adu Mensah Asare has been nominated by the Kumasi Traditional Council as compromise candidate for the vacant position.
Nana Adu Mensah Asare was nominated after lead contenders in the last election, Abraham Boadi and Michael Adusei, agreed to step aside.
The assembly is expected to either endorse or reject the new nominee at today’s poll.
