The students who met their untimely death at Kintampo Waterfalls were on their way back from an educational tour, Foster Boateng, Headmaster of the Wenchi Methodist Senior High School, has said.
According to him, it has been the norm for geography students to embark on such tours to complement what they study in the classroom.
Some 18 bodies have been retrieved from the Kintampo Waterfall after a tree fell following an earlier rainstorm in the area. The incident is said to have happened on Sunday March 19 at about 4:30pm.
According to reports, the tree fell onto persons, most of them students, who were swimming under the fall.
Mr Boateng, speaking in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson, host of Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM, said: “Fifteen of the victims are students of the Wenchi Methodist Senior High School.
“Normally those offering geography embark on such a study tour to acquaint themselves the reality on the ground, in addition to their classroom studies, and so these students also embarked on such a study tour only for the unfortunate incident to occur. The school authorities approved of the tour because it was a necessary part of their studies. [For the trip], we included masters who would control the children as well as a driver.”
