The Minister for the Interior, Prosper Bani, has declared Wednesday July 6 as a statutory public holiday to mark the celebration of the Eid ul-Fitr.
A statement issued by the minister said: “The general public is hereby informed that Wednesday 6th July 2016 which marks the celebration of Eid ul-Fitr is a statutory public holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country.”
Eid ul-Fitr is the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal. It marks the end of Ramadan, which is a month of fasting and prayer. Many Muslims attend communal prayers, listen to a khutba (sermon) and give zakat al-fitr (charity in the form of food) during Eid ul-Fitr.
