The FBI is investigating the Philadelphia judge that threw rapper Meek Mill back in jail last week.
The rapper was sent back behind bars on Wednesday for probation violation with a sentence of two to four years that many claimed was ‘unjust’.
Is has now emerged that the FBI is looking into the the judge who threw him back in jail.
According to TMZ, Judge Genece Brinkley is reportedly being investigated by the FBI for possible relationships she might have in Philadelphia including one with a local music mogul, Charlie Mack, whom Meek worked with early in his career, she allegedly asked Meek to sign with.
The feds have an interest in the judge and her potential relationships. This is an investigation looking into a possible extortionate demand. Undercover agents have been in the courtroom monitoring the Meek proceedings since April 2016,’ an FBI source told the New York Post.
The source continued, ‘Mack had previously told Meek how he ‘knows the judge and he could help him with his case.’
Mack has denied such a claim to the Post.
Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin has written a letter to the judge.
He called Meek a ‘good son, a good father, and a loyal friend.’
‘He knows that he is at a pivotal point in his career and that the stakes are high,’ Rubin wrote in a letter seen by Sports Illustrated. ‘I want you to know that I am personally invested in him so that he can help others.’
Although Rubin said that Mill ‘might not have handled himself well’ with Brinkley, he also expressed a desire to ‘help Mill realize his potential as an artist and use his growing influence and resources to give back to Philadelphia and other communities like us.’
Meek’s lawyer Joe Tacopina claimed last year Judge Brinkley asked Meek in her private chambers in front of Meek’s then-girlfriend Nicki Minaj to record a Boyz II Men song and give her a shoutout in the lyrics.
His attorney claimed the judge asked for him to do a remake of On Bended Knee.
He alleged that when the hip hop star laughed off the request the judge declared she was ‘not kidding’ and when Meek refused she said ‘suit yourself’.
There have been claims that his harsh sentence of two to four years as as a result of him denying her request.
Tacopina told TMZ he believes Judge Brinkley went against prosecutors recommendation for no prison sentence.
Brinkley also apparently turned up to Meek’s community service, which is unheard of.
She also allegedly requested that the rapper leave his current management company – Roc Nation – and sign with a Philadelphia local who she has a personal relationship with.
Tacopina told Billboard he believes Brinkley is ‘enamored’ with his client, calling her actions ‘totally inappropriate’.
Some experts in the legal field tell Billboard that Brinkley’s actions could be considered ‘vindictive prosecution’.
A rep for the FBI Philly field office said, ‘Per Justice Department]policy, we neither confirm nor deny the existence of investigations.’
Last Monday Judge Genece E. Brinkley ruled that two new arrests meant Mill had once again failed to live up to the conditions of his release.
‘I’m human. I’m not perfect,’ Mill said to Brinkley in court, according to Philly.com.
‘I’m asking for mercy. You gave me the ladder to do what I have to do to prevail in my struggle. I made it this far, I can’t really go back and start over.’
Even then, the hip hop star’s attorney claimed the adjudicator had a personal bias against his client, who was convicted of drug dealing and gun possession back in 2008, and now plan to appeal the sentence.
The rapper, real name Robert Rihmeek Williams, violated the terms of his parole on drug dealing and gun possession charges on multiple occasions.
Even though one of the cases, for an alleged airport assault, was dropped the adjudicator decided it was still enough to warrant further punishment.
Judge Brinkley told the 30-year-old he had been ‘thumbing his nose’ at her after she had given him multiple opportunities to go straight.
As she delivered her sentence she told the rapper, ‘I’ll be done with you.’
After she handed down her decision the suit and trainers-wearing hip hop star was led away in handcuffs for his latest spell in the clink.
On Tuesday, his lawyers asked Brinkley to step down, saying she stepped out of her judicial bounds numerous times.
